Where to plant. You can plant heathers in containers or open ground, in free-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. A sunny position is best and will result in more vibrant foliage colours. Heathers will also grow successfully in light shade, such as under high-canopied deciduous trees.

How big do heather bushes get?

Heaths grow about 1 foot tall by 1 1/2 feet wide; heathers about 2 feet tall by 2 to 3 feet wide. Space both about as far apart as their mature width and at least 2 feet away from other shrubs to foster good air circulation.

Is heather a sun or shade plant?

Heather needs about 6 hours of full sun, and prefers afternoon shade in hot areas of the country. Too much shade will make them leggy and ugly.

Is heather a good house plant?

Excellent grown in containers indoors or outdoors during warm weather. Perfect for hanging baskets. Makes a lovely, easy-care gift plant.

Are heathers poisonous to dogs?

Neither the flowers nor the leaves of heather are poisonous to cats, dogs or humans.

What does heather look like in winter?

With wiry stems clothed in evergreen needles, usually deep green but sometimes in other shades, winter heathers are usually derived from Erica carnea, which grows wild in the Alps and other cool mountainous regions. They often stretch sideways to make a good, weed-suppressing ground cover.

Does heather plant spread?

Heathers are low maintenance evergreen bushes producing urn-shaped flowers ranging from white to rose to deep purple, which are borne on spikes above a compact mass of low-growing or spreading foliage.

Does heather last all winter?

Heathers are the ideal plants for low maintenance gardens. They will give you colour all year round with Winter / Spring and Summer/ Autumn flowering varieties as well as many different foliage colours e.g., red, orange, yellow and silver.

Does heather turn brown in winter?

A greyish-white mycelium spreads over the damp foliage when the snow melts and the foliage quickly turns brown, and then greyish-white within a month. Damage by heather beetle, summer frosts and snow mould is local, but winter browning is widespread and severe in some years.

Does heather grow well in pots?

Growing Heathers in Containers If growing heathers in a container, use ericaceous compost and/or peat. Keeping the compost moist yet allowing for free drainage is key. We recommend installing a 2.5-5cm (1-2 inch) layer of grit at the base of your planting container to improve drainage.

Heather will flower from September to early November. The flowers contain an abundance of nectar which enables the bees an opportunity to stock up before the winter begins. Heather is a perennial plant that can survive for 30-40 years in the wild.

Does heather need a lot of water?

After being established, heather is picky about water requirements, needing about an inch (2.5 cm.) per week, including rainfall and supplemental irrigation. Too much water can cause roots to rot, but the soil should remain consistently moist. The heather flower is tolerant of sea spray and resistant to deer.

Do you cut back heather plants?

Most heathers should be cut back to the base after flowering – they don't grow well from old wood, so discard any that have become woody and leggy. The exception to this rule is the tree heather (Erica arborea). For the first couple of years after planting, prune back by two-thirds.

Are heathers perennial?

Scottish Heather plants are very hardy, colourful, low growing perennial shrubs native to the heaths, moors and woodlands. They are well suited to marginal pastures, and can thrive in acidic soil with little fertiliser and near drought conditions.

Is heather toxic to humans?

Heather bushes are safe to have around children. No part of the plant is toxic or harmful if ingested or touched. The flowers and leaves can be used in teas or for medicinal purposes, but always consult an informed source before consuming any part of your Heather plant.

Should heather be cut back in the fall?

Will heather grow in shade?

Heather will grow well in full sun or light shade. Whilst it will grow if planted in the shade the golden or foliage forms will lose their foliage colour and flowering will be reduced. Ideally chose a moist but free draining site and if planting on a bank remember that these sites dry out quickly.

Is heather a shrub or perennial?

Erica arborea - Tree Heath The largest of the heathers, really a tall shrub. It is typicaly blessed with pinky white flowers. Flowers in late spring to early summer.

Does heather do well in full sun?

Heather needs at least a half-day of sun (a minimum of six hours of sun a day). Full sun is better as the foliage colors intensify when fully exposed. Too much shade makes the plants leggy and affects the brilliance of their color.

Is heather difficult to grow?

Heathers are low maintenance, drought-tolerant and hardy-winter plants. They are easy to grow and features wonderful colorful flowers year-round.
